Leave It Better is one of our two missions, alongside People, Not Paperwork. It comes from a habit many people learn early: when you borrow something, return it in better shape than you found it. We try to apply that habit to everything Decurion touches: the organizations we work with, the people in their records, the staff who use our tools every day, and the communities those organizations serve.
It sounds modest. In practice it asks a lot of us.
Leave the person better
The measure that matters most is whether someone who walked into an office leaves in a better position than when they arrived. Software cannot do that by itself. It can remove what gets in the way: the lost paperwork, the missed callback, the referral that went nowhere, the form that sent a person home to find one more document.
Decurion is designed to close those loops. Appointments carry reminders. Referrals carry a status, so a person is not left wondering whether anyone received them. Missing items are flagged early, while the person is still in the room. Each of these is small. Together they can decide whether someone gets help this week or gives up.
Leave the staff better
Case work should be about people, not forms. We count it as a failure if our software adds one unnecessary click to someone’s day.
That is why Optio drafts the repetitive documents, why reports build from the record instead of a spreadsheet assembled late on a Friday, and why we sell Decurion by module, so an organization adopts what it needs instead of a sprawling system it has to work around. OnDec, our onboarding and training program, exists so the first month is guided and calm rather than a scramble. We would rather a team learn three modules well than every module badly.
We count it as a failure if our software adds one unnecessary click to someone’s day.
Leave the organization better
Organizations should be stronger for having worked with us, including if they one day stop. That is why exports are complete, available whenever you ask, and free. It is why we document how each system is configured, so knowledge does not live only in our heads. And it is why we never lock data into a format only we can read.
An organization that could leave easily and chooses to stay is the only kind of working relationship we want.
Leave the record better
Records decay. Addresses go stale, duplicates pile up, a name gets spelled three ways. Left alone, a database gets worse every year. We build for the opposite: duplicate detection that asks a person to confirm a merge, prompts to update details when someone returns, and audit trails that show who changed what and when. A record should be more accurate after each visit, not less.
Leave the field better
We hold ourselves to standards we would like every vendor in this work to meet:
- Never sell the data entrusted to us, or share it for profit.
- Keep a person responsible for every decision that affects someone’s help.
- Build to accessibility standards from the start, aiming for WCAG 2.2 AA and Section 508.
- Make leaving as easy as joining.
- Tell organizations plainly when something goes wrong, and what we changed.
We publish these commitments because we think the bar should be public. If others raise theirs, the people in these records are better off, and that is the point.
What it means for your organization
Leave It Better gives you a fair test to apply to us. After a year with Decurion, your records should be cleaner. Your staff should spend more of their day with people. The people you serve should have to repeat themselves less. And you should be able to take everything with you if you choose. If any of that is not true, we have work to do, and we want to hear about it.
We do not expect to be judged by what we say on a page like this one. We expect to be judged by the state of things after we have been there.
